  • 1 large Onion, preferably sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla Sliced into rings
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour For coating
  • 2 large Eggs Beaten
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs For extra crunch, can substitute with crushed cornflakes
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika For seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder For seasoning
  • Salt To taste
  • Oil spray Neutral oil like avocado or canola For crisping

Preparation

  • Preheat your air fryer to 380-400°F (193-204°C).
  • Slice the onion into rings, ensuring they are between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch thick.
  • In one bowl, keep the flour seasoned with salt, paprika, and garlic powder. In another bowl, beat the eggs.
  • In a third bowl, add panko breadcrumbs.
  • Pat the onion rings dry, then dip them in the flour, followed by the beaten eggs, and finally coat with panko breadcrumbs.
  • Lightly spray both sides of the coated rings with oil.

Cooking

  • Arrange the onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they do not overlap.
  • Air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking.
  • Check for a golden color; if not golden yet, add 1-2 more minutes as needed.
  • Once cooked, let the rings rest for 2 minutes on a wire rack.

Notes

For gluten-free, substitute with gluten-free flour and panko. Allows for experimentation with onion types and sizes for different textures.
