  • 1 loaf Brioche, challah, or thick sliced French bread Slightly stale bread is preferred for better soaking.
  • 6 large Eggs Gives structure and richness to the toast.
  • 2 cups Whole milk Or half milk and half cream for a richer texture.
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar Adds sweetness and caramel flavor.
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla extract Enhances the breakfast flavor.
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon (optional) Can be added for extra flavor.
  • 1/4 tsp Salt To balance sweetness.
  • 2 tbsp Butter For greasing the baking dish.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Grease a 9 by 13 baking dish with butter.
  • Cut or tear the bread into chunky cubes and toss them into the dish.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  • Pour the mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently to ensure the top pieces soak.
  • Let it sit for 15 minutes or refrigerate overnight for better results.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake until puffed and golden, about 45 minutes. The center should look set, not wet.
  • If the top is browning too fast, loosely cover with foil.

Notes

Serve with powdered sugar, warm maple syrup, and berries. Pairs well with savory dishes for brunch. Can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the fridge or frozen for later use.
