Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4-6 ounces Chipped beef (dried beef) Available in a jar or packet near canned meats.
  • 3 tablespoons Butter For richness.
  • 3 tablespoons All purpose flour To thicken the gravy.
  • 2-2.5 cups Milk Whole milk is best, but any kind works.
  • Black pepper Add to taste.
  • Optional extras: cayenne, garlic powder, sour cream Add according to taste.
  • 2 slices Bread for toast Thick sliced white bread is classic, use your preference.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Toast your bread first to have it ready when the gravy is done.
  • Chop the chipped beef into bite-sized pieces.

Cooking

  • Melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Sprinkle in the flour once the butter is melted and gently bubbling.
  • Whisk the butter and flour together for about 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste.
  • Slowly pour in the milk while whisking, starting with a splash.
  • Continue stirring as it heats until the gravy thickens, adding more milk if it gets too thick.
  • Stir in the chopped chipped beef and black pepper, letting it simmer gently for 2-3 minutes.
  • Taste the gravy and adjust salt if necessary, keeping in mind the saltiness of the chipped beef.

Serving

  • Spoon the creamed chipped beef gravy over the toast and serve immediately.

Notes

Feel free to add more black pepper or onion powder for flavor. If using biscuits instead of toast, serve it warm for a delightful twist.
