Ingredients
  

For the beef and sauce

  • 1 lb Ground beef (85-90% lean) Can substitute ground chicken or turkey.
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced Fresh is preferred, but garlic powder can work.
  • 1 tbsp Ginger, minced Fresh preferred, or powdered in a pinch.
  • 1/4 cup Soy sauce For seasoning the beef.
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar or honey For sweetness.
  • 1 tbsp Sesame oil A little goes a long way.
  • 1 tbsp Rice vinegar Optional, brightens up the sauce.
  • 1/2 tsp Red pepper flakes or gochujang Optional, for heat.

For serving

  • 4 cups Cooked rice Jasmine rice is recommended for its fragrance.
  • 1/4 cup Green onions, sliced For topping.
  • 1 tbsp Sesame seeds For topping.
  • 1 cup Shredded carrots or cucumber Optional, for extra crunch.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Start cooking the rice first so it is ready when the beef is done.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  • Once the beef is mostly browned, drain off excess grease if needed.
  • Add minced garlic and ginger to the skillet and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Cooking

  • Pour in soy sauce, brown sugar/honey, sesame oil, and rice vinegar (if using).
  • Let the mixture bubble for a couple of minutes until it looks glossy and clings to the beef.
  • For a sticky takeout style, let it simmer a bit longer.
  • Spoon the beef mixture over the cooked rice and top with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

Customize your bowl with toppings like fried eggs, steamed broccoli, or other veggies. Store leftovers separately for easy reheating.
