  • 40 pieces saltine crackers Enough to cover a baking sheet in one layer
  • 1 cup butter Melt in saucepan
  • 1 cup brown sugar Combine with butter in saucepan
  • 2 cups chocolate chips Milk or semi-sweet chocolate recommended

Optional toppings

  • chopped nuts Almonds, walnuts, or pecans can add crunch
  • flaky sea salt For an extra salty touch
  • sprinkles For festive decoration
  • crushed candy canes Great for a holiday twist

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and parchment paper if available.
  • Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, edge to edge on the baking sheet.

Making the Toffee

  • In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until smooth and let it come to a boil.
  • Once boiling, set a timer for 3 minutes, stirring often to prevent scorching.
  • Pour the hot toffee over the crackers, spreading it gently with a spatula.
  • Bake for 5 minutes until the top is bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips on top. Let them sit for 2 minutes to melt.
  • Spread the melted chocolate into an even layer and add any toppings immediately.

Cooling and Serving

  • Cool completely, then chill in the fridge for 30 to 60 minutes until firm.
  • Break into pieces and enjoy!

Notes

For best results, use a rimmed baking sheet and make sure to boil for exactly 3 minutes to get the perfect toffee snap. Store in an airtight container for up to a week. Can also be frozen in layers.
