Fries

  • 32 ounces frozen fries Crinkle fries or shoestring fries work best.

Meat Sauce

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey Can substitute with ground chicken or lentils.
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup Base for the sloppy joe sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon mustard Adds tang.
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup diced pickles or pickle juice Optional for diner-style tang.

Cheese

  • 2 cups shredded cheese Cheddar, mozzarella, or pepper jack.

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • Bake the frozen fries on a sheet pan until they start to brown.
  • In a skillet, cook the ground beef or turkey with diced onion until meat is browned; drain excess grease.
  • Stir in garlic, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper; simmer until thickened.

Assembly

  • Layer half of the cooked fries in a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Spoon the sloppy joe mixture over the fries.
  • Add the remaining fries on top of the meat sauce.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.

Baking

  • Bake in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 15-20 minutes.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding diced bell peppers or jalapenos. This dish is versatile; you can use different types of fries and cheeses.
